Ahilya:

Bindings of the Social Order

A set of 3 works on display at 21st All India Studio Pottery Exhibition.

Organized by AIFACS & Delhi Blue Pottery Trust, New Delhi.

10th - 16th March, 2019

In the works here, I explore the humanity’s agenda to contain life within the bounds of fixed and uniform structures - social, political, cultural or others. The geometrical, sharp edged bases of my sculptural installations represent the fixed structural orders that bind down the undulated, free spirited organic forms above on a tight leash. Almost restraining them, lest they find their own paths. These organic forms embody the fresh ideas, thoughts and progress for humanity.

We are made to believe that ‘rules’ are way of life and it is the only path to progress. Fresh ideas in conflict with the existing order is coerced into surrendering to the rules using both reward and fear, sometime even violence. Straying away from them therefore, comes with consequences. A Ahilya is cursed into a stone, a Gandhi is shot down, a Hussain is banished from his land. But throughout history, time after time, new ideas eventually take wings and find a way to express themselves. To give shape to a new order, a new path. Sometimes by violence, sometimes by divine salvation.

Imprints Of Life On Clay

‘Undulations… Imprints Of Life On Clay' - my first solo show of my recent ceramic works, is a culmination of 1.5 years of effort that intends to liberates both my imagination and the medium of its underlying sense of stillness.

The works in this show are intended to reflect an inspiration from nature. To create a series that is alive and conversing. It should tell a new and different story to every viewer and inspire them to discover one of their own.

A Solo Show Of My Recent Ceramic Works At Open Palm Court, IHC, New Delhi. 27th -30th Sep, 2018.

The show 'Metamorphosis...' is like a humble signpost in my long journey in ceramics. A marker, that not only apprises me of where I have arrived, but also silently points to my journey ahead. As a journey in creativity, I can distinctly relate with the idea of 'Metamorphosis'. Having made simple functional wares on the wheel for a while, I found myself unsettled with the fact that they were still something that came 'off-the- wheel' and were not entirely an expression of my imagination, yet. I was unsure to claim them as truly mine. It was the medium again that resolved my anxiety when I started experimenting with coils of clay. I found comfort in this new language.
